Although most of us take furniture for granted these days, there was a time when furniture was pretty much reserved for the wealthy. For instance, during the high Middle-Ages, only the upper classes had the luxury of sitting in chairs. Thus, when the rare occasion arose when different classes of folks mixed socially, the rich guys would sit in the chairs while the peasant classes would have a comfortable seat on the floor.
