Preparing for a cross country move? You can make the whole process easier by planning your packing strategy well ahead of time. Be ready to go as soon as the long distance movers show up at your door.
For most families, they have too much junk around their house that should not even take up space in moving boxes. As you start packing, you can set aside a box for items that can be given away and a box for items that can be thrown in the trash. This will allow you to sort through your clutter as you pack. Being able to get rid of a certain amount of things will also ease your mind as you begin to see progress.
When it comes to filling boxes, you should take the time to wrap and pad any of the delicate items. This goes the same for kitchen dishes and related breakables. As you pack these items, be sure to label the boxes appropriately so that they are handled with care. In terms of filling boxes, make sure that most boxes are not more than 50 pounds in weight. While your moving crew can probably handle the heavy items, they might damage boxes that they are stacked on in the truck.
Sometimes it can be easier to start with just one or two rooms when packing for moving. That allows you to consolidate your packing and progressively work towards the higher traffic areas in your home. It helps to keep a clear path in each room that you pack up so that the boxes can easily be transported out to your moving truck.
If you have a particularly large amount of items to pack, you can use pods to store items prior to using the moving truck. Alternatively you might want to look at packing everything in pods and having them shipped as they are filled. While this might not be advantageous for everyone, it can break up an overwhelming task.
I wish I had set up the boxes for donations and trash years ago. That way I would not be in the position to have to go through it all right now.
