Veneer Edge Banding

Furniture grade wood veneer

Veneer edge banding is sheet veneer that has been pre sanded and is available in many sizes. Some types of these real wood veneer sheets are pre glued, making the application of this easy home improvement much easier than usual. Most self adhesive veneer edge banding uses a hot melt adhesive that can be applied with an ordinary clothes iron. The application of veneer edge banding makes the appearance of plywood projects much more aesthetically pleasing. Veneer edge banding is used as a quick and easy “do it yourself” way to improve the appearance of your home or various projects. It can be used on projects like homemade bookshelves, tables, chairs and more, or it can be used to improve baseboard appearance, cupboards, and more.

Because three quarter inch thick plywood is popular, the seven eighths inch edge banding is an ideal choice. This allows some excess that can be trimmed flush with a precise tool. The only tools that veneer edgebanding requires are an edgetrimming tool and a clothes iron, as a majority of them have adhesive already on the back. The options for veneers range from real wood material, such as bamboo, cherry, and mahogany, to wood facsimiles of various colors and finishes. If you choose to use a stain or finish on the edge banding or the project once you’re finished, be sure to pay attention to the splice lines in the roll, as they can become more prominent upon staining or finishing. Also, as a matter of courtesy, be sure to use a iron that is not also used on clothing or to clean the iron when you are finished. The hot melt adhesive may drip or attach itself to the iron, which can transfer it to other articles of clothing if it is not cleaned.

  1. Are there any particular brands or types of edge trimming tools that work really well with edge banding? I know they probably have them at hardware stores.

  2. Is it cheaper to buy veneer edge banding online (after tax, shipping, and handling) or at a local store? I enjoy supporting local businesses, but I don’t think I can afford to buy it there.
